Despite the sky-high prices for land and realty there are still desolate buildings in Japan. This motel had been built in 1973 and was closed and abandoned in 1997. Separate stairs lead from the hall to each of the ten rooms and the interior is very similar to the “love-motels” where you can book a room for two for just a couple of hours. With a whopping 500 million visits a year, love hotels – establishments that offer couples a private, short-stay location in which they can indulge in the pleasures of the flesh – are a booming business in Japan. Indeed, it’s been estimated that 1.4 million Japanese people, or 2% of the country’s population, visit a love hotel each day. Other than the fact that I love saying “Lake Titicaca,” the lake named after poop and boobs is famous for a variety of reasons. One of the lesser known but most interesting are the indigenous Uro’s floating islands that they have made and remade from totora, a catail like reed, and provide a home and sustenance for over 2000 people on about 40 islands. The islands have to be continually rebuilt as they do begin to come apart and sink in some places. Some island dwellers occasionally step on a thin spot and put an unsuspecting leg into the frigid water. Visitors have likened walking on the islands to walking on a waterbed.

It’s never pleasant to have your mug shot taken, as these recent photos of emotional arrestees show. Of course, not getting popped for drunk driving or criminal trespass is a good way to avoid the sheriff’s harsh camera. By and large, no one is happy when they get their mugshot taken (though we could do a gallery of people who seemed thrilled). But some folks really take it pretty hard. A real-life Barbie? Teenager Dakota Rose, who styles herself as a living doll, has become an internet hit. Young girls are fast becoming internet sensations not because of their vocal skills or dance moves, but because they resemble living dolls. Staring doe-eyed at the camera, with cupids bow lips and a porcelain complexion Dakota Rose has been hailed a real-life Barbie. While some people want to be like a Barbie doll, KotaKoti, or Dakota Rose, is a 16-year-old kid that truly looks like one. Her personal blog and videos have garnered a lot of attention, especially from Japan and China, where she has a lot of fans and has been dubbed a cosplayer. Here’s an interesting collection of some curious black and white photographs of the police officers from 1890–1930. The 20th century brought enormous changes to nearly every aspect of life, so police work was bound to be affected. Different forces worked in different ways and there was little contact or co-operation between them. There was no central criminal record-keeping. Greater mobility of criminals and the need to make use of new technology led to amalgamations of police forces. Some aspects of police work have changed much less. The Soviet Union came to an end, to be replaced by a multitude of new or revived republics, all with their own flags. Czechoslovakia split into its two component parts, while Yugoslavia splintered, as the individual nationalities all asserted their independence. All this happened very recently, but many states have vanished from the map before over the centuries. Some of us were old enough to get the jokes. Some of us weren’t. We all understood the word “naked” though, which was enough to try to hide them underneath button up shirts.

Homemade Pen/Pencil Cannons

When we got bored in class, sometimes our thoughts turned to turning the contents of our pencil boxes into projectile weapons. Hacking a retractable pen was the best option — they needed no additional parts to fling something across the room.

Pogs

Fights over games or trading could lead to an outright ban for everyone. But some teachers were never big on the idea of tossing heavy metal slammers around in the classroom.

Tamagotchis

Tamagotchis were confiscated for being remarkably irritating beeping machines. Anyone who owned one was too busy feeding it to pay attention in class anyway.

Temporary Tattoos

Administrators often banned temporary tattoos as part of the dress code, perhaps because they felt they would encourage actual tattooing. Sometimes we were warned about sick individuals who used temporary tattoos to get kids high on lickable PCP.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Parents objected to reading Alvin Schwartz’s terrifying masterpiece in schools when it gave their kids nightmares. If you were lucky, indulgent teachers went ahead and read it aloud anyway.

Rubber Poppers

The whole point of these toys was to turn them inside out and watch them “pop.” After the third time you set one off in math class, it was likely to be confiscated and never seen again. Luckily, they were easy to replace. Advanced popper owners discovered that it was more entertaining to use suction to covertly stick them to friends’ bodies.

Black Lipstick

While excessive make-up was generally frowned upon in middle school, black lipstick was in a category of its own and had to be washed off immediately. Related item: black nail polish.

Slam Books

Slam books were circulating notebooks containing questions or names of individuals for classmates to respond to. A staple of ’80s classroom life, slam books were frowned upon in the ’90s for promoting bullying and inappropriate content.

Card Games

Card game bans ranged from Pokemon to Magic the Gathering. Like Pogs, nerd cards were a seen as a distraction that often led to fights over trading or game play.

Silly String

Primarily a concern around graduation, Silly String typically was banned to keep the school janitors sane.

Big League Chew

Big League Chew was either banned as part of a general bubble gum ban, or because administrators were concerned that it would promote tobacco use. Related item: candy cigarettes.

Wacky Packages Stickers

These were banned just for the gross-out factor.

Troll Pencil Toppers

Naked dolls mounted atop pencils inevitably led to dirty jokes, but troll toppers were confiscated when more attention was paid to braiding their hair than classwork.

Sagging Pants

Usually banned by dress code rules for indecent exposure.

Ring Pops

These were banned or confiscated due to sanitary concerns. Kids, don’t let other kids lick your Ring Pop.

Kool-Aid Hair Dye

Some schools were more lenient about wacky-colored hair than others.

Sticky Hands

I kind of understand this one. Inevitably, Sticky Hands would get covered in unidentifiable detritus. This made it that much more amusing to fling them at your classmates.

Ripped Jeans

Some schools had an outright ban on ripped jeans. Others only cared about the position of the holes and dealt with students on a case by case basis.
